Mastodon: Bringing metal back from extinction?
I remember maybe 4-5 years ago watching Mastodon perform on MTV. A couple questions came to mind: 1.)I don’t know if this band is reaching their demographic… seeing they are a drink your blood raging heavy metal band. 2.)Why is there so much buzz about this band? …I had long since parted with my Metallica t-shirts and bowl cut hair style… who is listening to this? 3.) When do they play music on MTV & Why am I watching MTV? (I think it was TRL)
So, now. I’ve been reading/hearing about these guys being the savior of Metal. I hope so, everything I’ve heard lately seems to be absolute garbage… granted, I don’t listen to much and could be completely ignorant, I just don’t think so. Different strokes right???
After taking a listen or two to their new disc, Crack The Skye, I can see what separates these guys. The music is psychedelically EPIC… that doesn’t necessarily mean the best thing I’ve ever heard… Long swirling intros, crazy guitars, beating drums… I think it’s the vocals that always turn me of to metal. Conveniently, I’ve posted an instrumental… yay.
