Beastie Boys Single ft. Nas and Sad News ft. Cancer

beastieboys

The last time the Beastie Boys deamed another M.C.  dope enough to work with them was on the track “Get it Together,” which featured Q-Tip the almighty.   It’s been 15 years since “Get it Together,” but last Tuesday The Beastie Boys released their new single, featuring Nas, called, “Too Many Rappers”.

Overall the track is slower, more epic and less laid back than what Beastie Boys fans are accustomed to hearing from their favorite whiners.  The beat is uninteresting for the Boys and Nas actually outshines all of them on their own track.  The Beastie Boys can’t make a bad song though, so “Too Many Rappers,” is still entertaining, but maybe after 30 years together the Boys are finally starting to lose their edge.  Even though “Too Many Rappers” is suppose to be threatening and meaningful – a state of the union address for ringtone rap – it lacks bite.  A song that’s suppose to scare faux rappers should not reference peanut butter sandwiches and tartar sauce.

The new single detracts from the announcement from Adam Yauch, a.k.a MCA, that he has been diagnosed with a form of throat cancer.  The Boys have cancelled all their upcoming shows and pushed back the date for their forthcoming album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1.  Luckily the cancer is localized to a small and easily-removed tumor.

The operation will not affect M.C.A’s voice, thereby insuring that future generations will be privelage to all the absurdist rap we’ve all grown to love unconditionally, even if the new single is only o.k.

  1. Good news that the cancer is treatable and won’t affect M.C.A’s voice! I have to admit tho, terrible as it is, I almost spit out my coffee at the headline.
