The Thursday Retrospect – Geggy Tah, My Morning Jacket, The Band, Cold War Kids, Black Keys

mp3: Geggy Tah – Whoever You Are
Sacred Cow- Haahaha, yes I did. Remember this one? I do. Geggy Tah was the first concert I ever went to. It was at the Metro in Chicago, I was about 11-12 and fucking excited. I think Sacred Cow was one of the first albums I ever owned and I used to play it on repeat. Guilty pleasure with solid pop-sensibilities.

mp3: My Morning Jacket – Bermuda Highway
At Dawn – Vintage (2001 ha!) My Morning Jacket. I saw MMJ play with the Black Keys at Red Rocks last summer. I remember hearing Jim James sing, “oh, don’t carve me out.” His haunting voice and an acoustic guitar resonating in between two rock walls, seemingly carved out of the earth. It was incredibly moving. That was a good night.

mp3: The Black Keys – Countdown
The Big Come Up - Speaking of the Black Keys, TBCU was their first disc and man its a good one. I always had a respect for the blues but it was set afire after listening to the Black Keys. I murdered this disc every drive for a long time. Then I went out and bought some Howlin’ Wolf and…. game over.
“You stole my heart but you can’t take my mind.” genius

mp3: The Band – Don’t Do It
Rock of Ages – Originally a Marvin Gaye song, the Band covered and released it as their only single off of Rock of Ages. Most people probably recognize it from the INSANE rockumentary of The Bands last concert, The Last Waltz. If you haven’t watched it, GO NOW. I always crack up seeing Van Morison drunk & dancing in a purple crush velvet one piece.

mp3: Cold War Kids – Every Valley is Not a Lake
Hang Me Up To Dry EP – CWK’s re-released this absolute gem on their latest Loyalty to Loyalty. Problem is, the re-recorded it!?!? I’m partial to the version from the EP before they were doing Prada photo-shoots. If you want to be an inovative and fresh band you can’t rely / regurgitate your back catalogue… anywho, this track is fantastic.
