Why Aren’t You Listening to Jail?

Jail is a Milwaukee revelation. From the first track on There’s No Sky (Oh My My) the listener has no choice but to shut the hell up and love the beauteous city of Milwaukee for producing this great rock n’ roll band.

There are very few bands that have to be classified as “rock n’ roll” and not simply “rock,” but it’s an important distinction. To classify Jail with all the insipid “rock” music would classify them under the same derisive nomenclature as the Jonas Brothers, and would insult this hard working rock n’ roll band. Jail rocks like the Ramones, especially on the song “The Biggest Nugget Of Them All”, but with more of a 50′s-60′s pop sensibility. There’s No Sky (Oh My My) sounds like a filthier version of Help in some places.

The album takes its name from the arresting first track, a straight forward get-on-the-dance-floor-and-bop-the-night-away track. The opening cut also showcases the odd but welcoming vocal style of Jail’s main singer, Vinnie Kircher.

Other great moments from the album are a true throwback track called “We’ve Won”, which is the album’s longest track at two minutes and thirty-five seconds, “Out Of Boots,” is a country esque songs layered with harmonies and haunting minor riffs, and “Beggar Sincere,” which epitomizes the old-fashioned rock n’ roll sensibility of the band.

Over all There’s No Sky (Oh My My), is a great rock n’ roll, one more time, rock n’ roll album, but it could use a little less reverberation. Sometime the album seems to retread the same ground, which is a bad sign when the album is barely a half an hour long, but it never becomes tedious.

So here are a few songs from Jail, Milwaukee rocking and rolling.

Oh yeah and they’re playing a show tonight at the Globe South, check it out.
