It’s been a day over three months since I first posted about The Almighty Defenders, and the countdown for the album began. I haven’t waited that long for something since I lost my virginity, and much like losing my virginity I wish parts were tighter, or looser, it’s sloppy, confusing, and mostly just screaming. The Almighty Defenders self-titled debut album, unlike that passionate night, is not disappointing though.
Mp3: The Almighty Defenders – Over the Horizon
Recording The Almighty Defenders only took four days to record, and it’s obvious. The album sounds like a great demo, but not like a polished product. Fans of 200 Million Thousand will appreciate this debut because apart from the tracks “Cone of Light” and “I’m Coming Home”, the album sounds like a Black Lips B-side collection.
Funnily enough, “Cone of Light,” and the Mighty Hannibal’s cover, “I’m Coming Home,” are the highlights of the album. Both tracks are throwbacks to the heydays of Stax, and are more soulful than the Black Lips could ever be without King Kahn or Mark Sultan. Another cut from the album that is surprising retro is “She Came Before Me,” a call-and-response style, early rock n’roll jam, but more distorted and subdued.
Even though The Almighty Defenders isn’t inspired, ground-breaking, or even coherent (especially on the noise and muttering tracks, “30 Second Air Blast,” and “Death Cult Soup n’ Salad), it doesn’t suck. Overall the laid back retro twang and drool sound of the album is damn original and enjoyable, even if it seems that the band is just being lazy drunks. The Almighty Defenders is an album to put on, feel weird, feel good, feel dangerous, think about your first girlfriend maybe, and enjoy dusk with cheap beer.
