Where We’ve Been: 2009 *Dirty Projectors-Bitte Orca*

MP3- Temecula Sunrise-Dirty Projectors
MP3- No Intention-Dirty Projectors
To all of you that do not follow me on twitter or did not follow me on twitter this past summer, I have a confession to make: Early in the month of June I was tempted. And possessing the addictive personality that I do, I gave in to this temptation and became temporarily and scarily an addict. Now I tried to ween myself off cold turkey or by substitution but nothing seemed to be able to shake the monkey on my back. The monkey->Dirty Projectors Bitte Orca.
Like Merriweather Post Pavilion before it, I shouted to anyone that would listen that Bitte Orca was the best album of the year. When asked why I simply stated that it was the real deal. The whole package. It contained many elements and facets of many of my favorite albums of all time. With each spin I’d hear gorgeous Pet Sounds-like harmonies, experimental nature reminiscent of Kid A, and synchronization worthy of the first Miles Davis Quintet.
I found it absolutely perfect and void of holes especially because it lacked those moments that I often find in records where I say to myself “man, a drum fill would’ve fit well here” or “if they just would’ve stretched the vocals here.” All of those spaces had been filled by voices, voices, more voices, and fantastic guitar work. An album like that required every moment of attention that I could afford.
And that’s when it got ugly. I’d wake up every morning, get into my car, and without second thought, track back to song one, “Cannibal Resource.” The entire album would play to and from work. EVERYDAY. I made track two, “Temecula Sunrise,” my default ringer for incoming calls, text message notifications, and “No Intention” my voicemail ring. It wouldn’t leave me alone. I nnnnneeeeeeeeedddddddeeeddd it.
That all changed when the cd was so damaged from overuse that it was unplayable and I got a new cell phone. That is when my addiction ceased. The chains had been broken and I again felt free to listen to whatever I wanted. One solid month of exploring different avenues and artists and then……..>>>>>>>>>
