Thursday Retropect – 10/08/09: Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Otis Redding, The Beatles, Animal Collective

mp3 – Animal Collective – Banshee Beat
Feels - When Animal Collective’s 7th album (Feels) came out, it dropped a bomb on everyone. Critics and fans were chomping at the bit for a follow up to Sung Songs. The only other band playing music like this was, well, no one. Feels was a departure from the freak folk tag relying more on electrified components and featured all four members of the collective (Avey Tare and Panda Geologist and Deakin).
mp3 – Jeff Buckley – So Real
Grace - So, 1994, I was eleven. Michael Jordan had quit basketball and I needed a hero. Enter the beginning of my musical enlightenment. My older brother would play music from bands I had never heard of like Wilco, The Replacements, Matthew Sweet, Jeff Buckley etc. It wasn’t until high-school that I rediscovered Jeff Buckley’s Grace. The falsetto originator made it cool to be ‘emotional’ and sing your heart out. I’m going to go Kanye on you and say, “Grace is one of the best albums of all time, all time!” If still alive, who knows what this man could have done? Great things, for sure.
mp3 – On A Friday (radiohead) – Philippa Chicken
On A Friday Demo – Long before OK Computer and Kid A, Thom Yorke and crew used to meet on Fridays over the pond somewhere and work on their dream to be in a rock band. On this particular track its interesting to hear the young RH try their hands at some Beatles-esque pop-rock.
mp3 – Otis Redding – Love Man
Love Man - One of the the most soulful singers ever, Otis Redding can break your heart or make you want to dance with the flip of a 45.
mp3 – The Beatles – Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
Abbey Road – You might have heard of these guys before. If not, the Beatles are an electro-metal band from Detroit, currently touring with GWAR. For real tho, Abbey Road needs no introduction. My girlfriend recently raided her ma’s record collection. Score? Abbey Road!
