Hand me down tuesdaY: Soul Power

handmedown_header

On the way home from watching White Denim destroy their instruments on Thursday night/early Friday morning I rolled into a truck stop to get hydration, petrol and a much needed pastry for the ride home.  I acquired the goods and surprisingly ended up getting the song(s) that will be featured on this weeks hand me down tuesdaY.  These two songs that are fantastically familiar share the wonderful qualities of being simple, soulful, and sincere.  Written in a time when love songs were just love songs and not suicide notes or the soundtrack to self mutilation, these are instant smile igniters.

Ladies and gentlemen I bring to you two cover song recorded by Otis Redding, a man with a voice that I’m sure has the power to bring emotion out of the evilest of the evil, .  Both versions, original and cover, are perfect.  Sam Cooke’s “Cupid” and The Drifters “There Goes My Baby” were blueprints that weren’t in need of fixing, but adding a little Otis and the Stax horns never hurts….. Enjoy the hell out of them!!
