Immortal Monday: Whiskeytown’s Faithless Street

It would be way too hard to explain everything about this album that causes me to deem it immortal so I will just give you a brief introduction and let the music speak for itself. Whiskeytown, fronted by a snot nosed kid from Jacksonville, NC named David Ryan Adams, didn’t sound a whole lot different than most “alternative country” bands in the mid nineties. But what made them particularly special was their 21 years old leaders knack at songwriting. He had quantity down too but nearly every lyric about love, dreaming, or drinking, has the ability to strike a chord with your conscience or your heart. And even though the album is 14 years old and was born many miles away from my Milwaukee home, the people/feelings that populate the world created through the music is very similar.
Now many people have applauded or complained about the way that Adams crafts his albums; utilizing other musical styles that are direct influences as themes or outlines. But this one is different. Growing up a big fan of the Grateful Dead, Black Flag, and Gram Parsons, Adams found a way to incorporate all of the great music that he had ingested and was still ingesting into Faithless Street without making it too obvious. There’s some heavier numbers mixed in among the mostly slower country songs sung with an aggressive twang. And just because every song doesn’t sound heavy, in this case, words are louder than actions.
