If you are anything like me, and for my purposes, I’m going to assume you are, then the state of popular music at the turn of the century was cause for concern. The airwaves were dominated by the multi-headed beast that was bubble gum pop and I thought we might all be doomed. On the drive to school with my dad, I can remember thinking that I would have to look to the past for my musical inspiration, and that Bowie, Lou Reed, and even the almighty Jagger, had forsaken their fellow spirits in rebellion, for the greener pastures of contentment. Then I heard The Strokes.
Lists of any kind often seem to serve only as a lauchpad for musical debate, but as NME looks back at the 2000’s from this, the future. It shines a light on all the kickass we didn’t know we were in for back in 1999. And while no one will agree on it all (or probably even half of it), I want to take the opportunity to raise my, now familiar, PBR can, to NME’s number one album of the decade, The Strokes’- Is This It.
If this is it, I hope there’s plenty of it, and I hope there always will be.
