Everyone knows that French is the language of love, but only a select and happy few know that The Love Language is a seven piece band from Chapel Hill. The LL is aptly named, because their brand of lyrical, and sometimes moody pop would be the perfect soundtrack to fall in and out of love to, or at least good background noise for a 3 day fling.
Songs like “Blue Ange,” “Providence,” and “Lalita,” are reminiscent of other theatrical pop groups, but without being too derivative. At times they even sound like Milwaukee’s own Decibully. The LL seems to tread a thin line between musical past and future. The air-fairy vocal harmonies, tambourine lines, reverberated vocal lines, and the minimalist production all point to the band’s aging influence, but this band could not have existed without the lyrical histories of Morrissey, The Shins, the quirkiness of Ben Folds, as well as the mindless joy of the drug addled 90’s and early millennium radio.
The band gets too sappy at sometimes, but they are at their best when they forget about being mushy and just play the brand of simple rhythm rock n’ roll they are so good at, such as on their stand out track, “Lalita”.
