The Cream of Cream City: Call Me Lightning

Call Me Lightning (the name taken from a 1968 Who track) is the band that your friend ask you if you’ve heard, and shamefacedly, you have to admit that, no, you haven’t, but you’ve heard of them, and then the conversation turns into your friend gushing over their high-voltage paroxysm rock; you walk away sadly, street cred shattered, even despite your faux hawk and road bike.
Fear not, for I am here to expose to you all the beauty that is Call Me Lightning’s stripped down brand of spastic punk n’roll. On “Shook House Shakedown,” off of their sophomore album, Soft Skeletons, the harmonies are sung in a guttural whine akin to race car noises. The whole song, well actually more like the whole album, feels more like a race than a musical work.
Destruction derby is more like it though. CML is out to make fun music, but they are also out to tear your ears a new one, and while your brain slips under the influence of their maddening ruckus, you might even find yourself dancing a step or two.
