hand me down tuesdaY: Biggie done different

handmedown_header

Maybe I chose “Juicy”because it’s one of my favorite hip hop track ever or maybe I chose it because I rock the “red and black lumber jack, with the hat to match” every chance I get.  Regardless of my reasons I’m throwing this atcha….

I’ve always enjoyed the parodied hip hop song that is covered by an artist from a different genre but that is where it ends.  You can sing along in the car or giggle and sing along with one arm around one of your bros while the other mimics Flava Flav at a house party but, it serves little purpose otherwise.  But Emily Wells, a violin playing Texan that merges hip hop and classical music, takes a crack at the Notorious B.I.G.’s classic “Juicy” and does it in a way that I can get on with.  While knowing the original inside out makes it a tad hard to swallow at first, as the track continues there’s a dirty gutter quality that floats to the top while the strings are strung, gameboy beats help keep time, and lyrics about old school rap and “smokin’ skunk” are squeezed from the lungs of a delicate voiced woman.  I dig it for sure.  Her version is unpredictable and mad decent.

Let me know 8)
