Inlets: A Reason To Be Excited

If you’re not immediately sold on Inlets, just wait until the 50 second mark of “Bright Orange Air,” when the baroque basement ballad flowers into a spacey, almost tropical, chorus. There is an unmistakable of the exotic on “Bright Orange Air,” that bodes well for the rest of Inter Arbiter, due out April 20th on twosyllable records.
In 2006 Sebastian Krueger (Wisconsin native) released Vestibule, a free Inlets EP that garnered positive reviews from Gorilla Vs. Bear, Stereogum, and pretty much anybody whose anybody amongst the nobodies. Since then Krueger and, thereby, Inlets have slipped into a musical cave, only emerging to collaborate and co-conspire with the likes of Feist and My Brightest Diamond. All these collaborations have not been in vain though, considering the guest list on Inter Arbiter, which includes appearances by Angel Deradoorian, the prettiest girl from the Dirty Projectors, and Zach Francis Condon, founder and musical despot of Beirut.
On April 20th it will have been three and a half years since the last Inlets release; it will be interesting to see how the somber ghost pop of Vestibule might have changed during that long gestation period. If “Bright Orange Air,” is any indication of what to expect from Inter Arbiter, you can anticipate a brew of forlorn lyrics, nearly classical composition, skilled guitar work, and catchy hooks. It could be the saddest music you just have to dance to.
