Yo MKE Raps! Free Mixtape

Anyone looking for an introduction into the Milwaukee hip-hop scene, I’ve got just the thing. Two days ago HipHopDX and JC Poppe, along with the big wigs over at Maad Management, released a 19 song mixtape highlighting Milwaukee rap. Over the course of those 19 songs Yo MKE Raps! gives the perfect survey of the Brew City’s diverse hip-hop scene, going from Madlib-esque airy jazz beats to blown-out-speakers bass and hi hat loops.
Some of the songs on the mixtape are going to sound familiar, especially to anybody who listens to 88.9 (Kid Millions’ track, “Victim to the Beat), but for the most part it’s a compilation of undiscovered gems, like the sarcastic Frankie Flowers cut, “The Koolness”, and the laid back “Cyanide”, by Direc and RTystic, who summon up the lyrical ghosts of Tribe Called Quest. Another standout track is “BlackBerries,” featuring my favorite 414 emcee, Prophetic and produced by Dylan Thomas, who I don’t know anything about but whom I already have the highest amount of respect for, merely based on that track and a blissfully chosen alias.
