Hand me down tuesdaY: Gillian Welch

This edition of Hand me down tuesdaY has one purpose and one purpose only: To make sure that everyone that reads this weekly post is aware of the beauty created by the voice of Gillian Welch. To simply label her a country singer would be an error. A classification such as that would pigeonhole her into a category of music that A) I am not extremely fond of and B) probably had most of you closing this page after the appearance of that very word. After listening to these covers by her and also to songs that she’s covered, you will see that first and foremost she’s a singer. She’s a voice that speaks to all of us. She’s a sonic smile maker.
While you’ll notice that the majority of these tracks are associated with high profile artists; Ryan Adams along with Welch reworking “Revelator” on his unreleased pre Heartbreaker sessions Destroyer, Gillian covering Radiohead’s “Black Star” from The Bends and Neil Young’s “Pocahontas” from Rust Never Sleeps, I ask that you pay particular attention to the version of “Orphan Girl” courtesy of Horse Feathers. They’ve got an amazing sound and also have a record coming out on Kill Rock Stars this March. Their first two releases were extremely impressive and if this cover is any indication of what’s to come, I’m more than excited for album number three. Happy tuesdaY!
