Hand me down tuesdaY: If Odysseus had encountered Neko…

Female vocalists, eh? It’s always kind of a slippery slope when someone asks how I feel about female vocalists.
ME: “I don’t know. I haven’t given it much thought. But. I really dig the stuff Ella Fitzgerald did with Louis Armstrong. Their duets record? And Billie Holiday. I love me some Billie Holiday.”
Imaginary Friend: “Dude. Everyone likes Ella and Billie. Nina Simone too. How about something from your lifetime?”
ME: “Women still make records?”
Ok. Ok. If you read last week’s post you already know that I have a soft spot for women that croon (Gillian Welch). A few others that I admire are Jenny Lewis, Norah Jones, and Lykke Li. Well, and, Zooey Deschanel. Of course. But if I absolutely had to choose a favorite female vocalist, I would say without hesitation that it is the beautifully talented songstress, Neko Case.
While some may know her for delivering touches of sugar and honey to songs with The New Pornographers, a burgeoning solo career has allowed her to take center stage and showcase her amazing instrument. Her voice is as powerful as hurricane winds and as sweet as spring flowers. She’s another artist that tows the line between country and awesome, and honestly, I would listen to her sing instruction manuals. Forever. Had Odysseus run into her on the island of Circe, he might’ve had to.
Here are a couple tracks that she’s done a fantastic job of reworking. Everyone loves the Shangri-Las, “Buckets of Rain” closes out my second favorite break up album, Blood on the Tracks and “Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis” from Blue Valentine is one of my all time favorite Waits tracks taboot. Enjoy your tuesdaY!
