I have already started to do massive amounts of 12 oz arm curls in preparation for The Hold Steady’s new album, Heaven is Whenever, to be released on Vagrant Records the first Tuesday in May.  This album, minus the mustachioed keymaster Franz Nicolay, will be their fifth release and is guaranteed  to teach you a few things about religion, extracurricular activities, and the Mississippi River.  Oh, and if The Hold Steady comes to your town, their live show is guaranteed to leave you beaming. They’re by  far my favorite live band on earth right now!  Ask my friends;) Check some songs, followed by the new album’s tracklist, and the cities and dates of the places they have already plotted to destroy after the jump.

I still think "Stay Positive" is one of the great records of the last decade. Do you know what happened to their keyboard player? Surely he'd be hard to replace.

Fwiw, The Public Good out of Washington, DC has drawn some comparisons to The Hold Steady -- musically different, but singing about life going awry in similar ways.

If you're interested, music is at www.thepublicgoodonline.com.

Thanks for chiming in. I agree, Stay Positive is fantastic from start to finish. Very on par with the rest of their records. I read that Franz wanted to pursue other opportunities. Apparently he was tired of smiling and rocking faces:)
