The Courteeners – You Overdid It Doll

I don’t particularly endorse the phrase ‘guilty pleasure.’ I think it originated from sexually repressive environs and evolved into a way for people to disavow themselves of something they fear might be uncool, while still attempting to enjoy it. So, concerning Manchester’s The Courteeners and the subsequent debate over whether they are too poppy, I say… I like it. Guilt free. There were, as we all know, days when pop music didn’t carry the dirty connotation that now follows it like Charlie Brown’s raincloud, days when Queen, The Smiths, Stevie Wonder were all over the radio and current at the same time. When pop songs liberated via speakers rather than aimed no higher than ring tone sales. This track isn’t a revolution but it is a good time. Morrisey gave the Courteeners his endorsement when he asked them to support him on his 2009 U.S. tour and their debut, St. Jude didn’t catch with Americans. The followup Falcon out Feb. 22nd, just might. The first single, a synth laden guitar dance called, “You Overdid It Doll” is pretty damn cool, even if the video is a little bit somber for such a fun track.
