Diamond Rings gonna rule the world

Diamond Rings – Wait and See

Diamond Rings – All Yr Songs

If you’ve been reading Seizure Chicken regularly – nay, religiously – for the past six to eight months, you’d have read The Mad Chef’s celebratory post on Diamond Rings. However, if somehow that’s not the case, I’d like to use the release of his new Wait and See EP as an excuse to reintroduce all y’all bitches, hos and tricks to Mr. Diamond “John O’Regan” Rings. He’s from Toronto, he dresses like vintage David Bowie, looks like beanpole/Deerhunter Bradford Cox, and sings like the whiny baritone from The National. His Myspace musical genre – “melodramatic popular song” – is really more genuine than sarcastic; though he’s only released a handful of tunes, they’re all similarly sly recreations of glammy, gothy, hearty-on-sleevy 80s powerpop. However, he’s also got a nose for a hook like very few other contemporary artists – dare you to listen to his newest, “Wait and See” (or his older, similarly-addictive “All Yr Songs”), and not have the goofy, guiltily-awesome chorus comfortably wedged in your head – these are the types of songs that covertly sneak into your iTunes, but before you know it, their play count is just trouncing the Radiohead B-sides and the porn wavs. In conclusion, Diamond Rings is gonna be famous. Hugely, dick-pumpingly famous. According to this article, he’s finished recording his debut album, Special Affections – hop on the bandwagon while there’s still room (look for me towards the back; I’ll be the one who’s learning how to read*).
