Hand me down tuesdaY: White Boy Blues & some odds and ends

2010_handmedown

Hey all, time restraints are keeping this HmdT shorter than usual but I promise to post in full form next week.  Very quickly I’d like to throw your way some gravel throated blues that shakes, rattles, and howls.  On both accounts, the original by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band and the cover by The Black Keys, “Grown So Ugly” raises blood pressure and BPMs.  The vocal stylings of Don Van Vilet aka Captain Beefheart and Akron’s own Dan Auerbach might lead you to believe that they’re sonic siamese twins but the masterpiece that is Safe as Milk started getting dusty on shelves in 1967 and Rubber Factory soundtracked commercials no earlier than 2004.  Dig these two gems and some extras taboot.  I’m especially fond of Strand of Oaks covering Springsteen’s “Used Cars.”  Happy St. Paddy’s day!
