Concert Review: 4/06/10 Titus Andronicus-Project Lodge, Madison WI

On a small stage in a minimalist art space a couple miles from the freeway, the five twenty something’s from Glen Rock, New Jersey that are Titus Andronicus gutted me.  On a rainy Tuesday night they came to Madison’s Project Lodge and delivered a little over an hours worth of adrenaline fueled anthemic power to a small crowd (~100 people) of music loving wallflowers, whiskey breathed people pushers, and underage ahead of their timers.

From the opening chords of “A More Perfect Union” off of one of 2010’s most impressive and replayable releases, The Monitor, the energy in that tiny room never subsided.  Throughout the entire set lead singer Patrick Stickles screamed his ‘feelings’ into a malfunctioning sound system while he and his band mates thrashed around the stage seemingly enjoying the show just as much as the excitable audience.  Sweat comingled with backwashed swill from empty cans on the floor and stage as both the weeknight revelers and performers enjoyed the night.  Minus the sound glitches, Titus Andronicus tore through most of the new album, including the 14-minute epic closer “The Battle of Hampton Roads” like they have been playing this material for years.  The entire set was a highlight but standouts included The Monitor’s “A More Perfect Union,” “Richard II,” and “Titus Andronicus” and “Fear and Loathing Mahwah, NJ” off of the band’s debut The Airing Of Grievances.

I went because I read that they’re one of the best bands touring right now.  That’s no bullshit.  It was one of the most excitingly explosive shows that I have ever been to.  But simple too.  No gimmicks.  Just raw power.  Madison’s own His and Her Vanities opened the night and their brand of late nineties esque alternative pop/rock/noise was  pretty impressive too.
