Hand me down tuesdaY: Chill gets Chiller

To celebrate the release of my favorite record of the first quarter of the two dime two nickel, MGMT’s Congratulations out today on Sony Records, I’d like to put up one cover and one remix of “Time to Pretend” from their first effort, Oracular Spectacular. This song,  along with “Electric Feel” and “Kids” all have incredible amounts of immediacy, replayability, and longevity due to the fact that they don’t cause me grief when heard in the background of television commercials or as ringtones.  But you know all of that already.

The beautiful cover was recorded for a BBC Radio Live session by Jonsi of Sigur Ros.  The slowed down lyrics, music, and Jonsi’s fucking amazing voice add a whole new dimension to this track.  While the original has the ability to bring on tired and shitty James Dean cliches, at the hands of the delicate Icelander it becomes a gorgeous balloon popping reality reminder.   Duplicitous song meaning lovers unite.

Diplo’s remix is re-meh.  Give it a listen if you haven’t already.  And oh, Milwaukee, Jonsi will be at The Pabst Theater on April 26th and MGMT will bring out the freaks at The Riverside on June 20th!!  Happy tuesdaY!

There is absolutely no denying that Jonsi has one of the most beautiful voices around. I'm not familiar with a lot of Sigur Ros, but he is a talent for sure and I will certainly seek out more of his work because of your post. That being said, although his cover of “Time to Pretend” is in my opinion, melodically perfect and to my novice ear, very reminiscent of the wonderful Jeff Buckley, I think it loses the insane, infectious, can't sit still energy that I love about MGMT. The slower version, although beautiful, may just be…slower. Thanks for the great post!!
