Costa Rican Riches: Las Robertas
In a twist of fate, I bought a plane ticket to San Jose to go visit a vulgar Frenchman, and the very next day I stumbled across a Las Robertas track on Gorillaz vs. Bear.
There’s really no need to write anything when a band offers their entire album for free on their Bandcamp site: Las Robertas are four girls from San Jose Costa Rica who kick enough ass so that you don’t feel like your doing a good deed by listening to a chick-rock group.
Cry Out Loud is a slowly-driven and mournful noise-pop album that occasionally brightens it’s smoldering tempo with a hand-clap or a surf-rock riff. The vocal work on Cry Out Loud is sweet and lethargic, even if the lyrics sometimes get crowded out by the drums and white-noise overdrive. Overall, the album is a kind of spacey gem, and hopefully Las Robertas won’t disappear into the concrete humidity of San Jose without coming stateside, or without releasing a more mature follow-up to Cry Out Loud.
Since that last sentence was written Las Robertas have accepted my friend request on Facebook, so now I feel the need to elaborate…
