Hand me down tuesdaY: Girls
When Album was released last year, The Mad Chef metaphorically creamed his jeans. His passion for the record and endorsement of it lead to Girls rising to the top of my favorite artists of 2009. With a crazy backstory and a rad lead single, my high hopes for the California kids were realized when I felt track 2, “Laura,” played just as well as “Lust for Life.” Sing song-y lyrics, a hip swaying melody, a bleeding guitar line and an Elvis Costello vocal doppleganger make it a winner.
Husband and wife, Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner, otherwise known as Mates of State, give “Laura an interesting cover treatment. They blend together cheesy record scratching samples, interestingly pretty vocal harmonies, electric organs, and give the song another dimension by using call and response. This cover versions happy sounds also make the song lose most of its emotional meaning, but I still kinda dig it. The Incubus-like scratching turns me off a bit but not enough to toss it. What says you?
