Hand me down tuesdaY: What?!?!?!?

On Saturday I experienced one of the biggest musical WTF moments in my life when twitter notified me that Phish, a band that I have followed since puberty, was covering a song off of one of my favorite albums of all time, Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Long since hearing the opening strums of “King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1,” Jeff Magnum and co.’s second and final album has been keeping me rooted in 1945 via 1998 while a steady diet of new and old Phish bootlegs has been keeping 1983 to the present on the tip of my ear drums.  On Saturday night at Maryland’s Merriweather Post Pavilion the two worlds melded together.  It’s an interesting cover choice that sounds like exactly what it is; Phish covering indie rock.  There’s extra fills, an electric guitar solo and a piano .  It definitely houses the pulp of the original but it’s tweaked just enough to satisfy the haters.  Nostalgia and wow factor keep me from criticizing it, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t.  What says you?  Happy tuesdaY, y’all.
