Album Review: Best Coast “Crazy For You”
Anyone can listen to Best Coast’s Crazy For You front to back and enjoy it, but not everyone will be able to discern individual tracks. The Los Angeles duo can write one song (a beach-rock track with a fast pace and ample reverb), and even though that one song is good and a perfect accompaniment to the true summer days of late, it’s still just one song done 13 times over.
Every track is enjoyable in the same light-hearted way, and it’s a testament to Bethany Cosentino’s voice that Crazy For You is as good as it is. Starting with “Boyfriend,” the effortlessness of Cosentino’s vocal work is on full display. Cosentino’s voice is like unwashed champagne glass, and it is that quality that separates Best Coast from the legion on other indie-surf-rockers doing the exact same thing by the thousands.
One moment that does stand out on Crazy For You are the lyrics on “Goodbye,” when Cosentino bemoans her job, love life, and the fact that her cat can’t talk. The next three tracks are all 5mph slower than the rest of the album, with the highlight of those 2 minute ballads being “Our Deal,” which benefits from being the most produced track on this sparse album with a few added guitars and whirling overdubs.
“Bratty B,” manages to prop up the latter half of the album with it’s contrasting directness, and it’s the last track on Crazy For You worth listening to apart from the last track and already most popular Best Coast song, “When I’m With You”.
If this album were any longer or any sunnier it would be intolerable, but as it stands, Crazy For You is a brief and good album without being groundbreaking. Once you get past it’s instantly and highly addictive qualities, Crazy For You fails to sustain or impress, but for the time being, just like other drugs from California, it feels great.
