The Long Lost Haz Solo Interview! Get To Know Milwaukee’s Best

…not that Milwaukee’s best, but rather Milwaukee’s best and most ambitious emcee, Haz Solo.  We can all stop sucking Minneapolis’ dick for hip-hop and rapper-heroes because now we have our own vanguard of the young and talented.  For my money, Haz Solo is the best pound for pound rapper in the 414 and far beyond all actual or implied borders of this city.

You can only disagree with me after you download his mixtapes, for free.

Mp3: Haz Solo – Good Grief (Prod. Dylan Thomas)

You stated in an October ’08 interview with the Shepherd that you planned on releasing 16 albums/mixtapes worth of material in the following year.  How many did you actually release and which one are you most proud of?

Good ol’ ’08 lol I released only 4 projects which were; Hazzy New Year, She Loves Me She Loves Me Not, Short and Sweet and Greater Than. I’m most proud in S.L.M.S.L.M.N. for the simple fact that I was in a new relationship and I felt on top of the world. That project is still inspiring to me.

Even though you didn’t make it to 16, you still released more material in one year than most people do in their entire careers.  How do you maintain that level of motivation and how do you stay inspired?

Right! A lot of good artist have loads of music recorded that don’t get released for some reason.. I like to share. If I feel what I have made is nuts I am going to find a way to release it. Whether it be free download or pressed up to sale. My inspiration comes from the gift to do so. I’m blessed for being able to do what I do musically and it drives me to stay creative and to continue building a signature sound.

What have you got in the works right now?

Currently I am producing projects for Dameon Ellzey, JIMIJAMES, Tay Butler, and Ka$h. I have also been working on a number of  beat projects to be released this year. Busy, busy, busy. Rapping wise, I have been collaborating with a  few artist in Milwaukee as well as California.

There’s a lot of comic book and geek culture making it’s way into hip-hop right now, most notably MF DOOM. Why do you think comic book/geek culture works so well in hip-hop right now?

Maaaaaaan you got me. Graffiti is a huge part of the hip hop culture which ties into comic illustrations… i don’t know… *calls the geek squad…

Apart from yourself who are some of your favorite emcees or producers in Milwaukee?

Emcees:
Young Focus, Signif, Dylan Thomas, Prophetic, Tay Butler
Producers:
Dylan Thomas, Brazil 5000, Klassik

Do you feel well supported in Milwaukee?  What does Milwaukee have to do in order to improve the hip-hop scene?

Yes I feel strongly supported by my city. I think if everyone would just listen to their own rants about the scene and do something to change it, that is when it will improve. Just nagging about won’t change it, it just makes everyone bitter.

The art for Junebug is sweet, who made that?

Yes yes. My bro Whaz laced it like a corset! www.whazthevillain.com

When you were growing up which emcees did you look up to?  What album was vital to your development as a rapper/producer?

No Limit records/ Cash Money Records made me who I am now.

What are you listening to right now?

Cool Kids-Tackle Box
Haz Solo- Shmaz Shmolo
Curren$y- Pilot Talk
Madlib- (any and everything)
SignifxHaz- The Transition Rmx ep
