FUTUREBIRDS: Make Good Music/Keep You Company
As the door is getting closer and closer to closing on what has been the hottest and rainiest couple o’ months I can remember, my annual “ coolest things I’ve done this summer” list is starting to come together. While camping trips, friend visits and shows attended will all land near the top, picking up FUTUREBIRDS debut record Hampton’s Lullaby (AUTUMN TONE) will definitely be intermingled. An album that has kept me company in a car while massive amounts of rainwater made driving temporarily impossible; been a passenger seat companion on many LONG and air conditioned drives; and also been the only answer to the inevitable “what have you been listening to” question for the last couple of months all make it’s placement on that list mandatory.
SIDE NOTE: if you’re a sucker for or fan of the pedal steel this album isn’t in your wheelhouse it is your wheelhouse.
Coming out of Athens, Georgia FUTUREBIRDS are a many headed monster that utilize their surroundings well by blending the boogie and soulful aspects of southern rock with the experimental and reverb heavy elements of the alternative music that sprouted there. Songs like opener “Johhny Utah,” “APO” and closer “Hamptuhn’s Lulluby” are full of those head clearing southern/country/swampy/gospel guitar moments that are as raucous as they are beautiful. While all of the songs on Hampton’s Lullaby are movers and shakers those three are sure to have you doing ‘the eyes closed sway’ with the best of em. And songs like “Yur Not Ded” and “Happy Animals” glue it all together by adding variety in the form of just the right amount of haze and fuzz. GET THIS RECORD sure to be on my end of the year list!
