Radiohead Covers//Just/ Mark Ronson//Paranoid Android/Brad Mehldau// Hand me down 2sdaY

Whether you’re familiar with this cocktail is of no matter. It’s Radiohead’s “Just” shaken and stirred with Mark Ronson’s signature production.  There’s the consistent stax-ish horns, some dixieland soloing and Phantom Planet’s Alex Greenwald lending his vocal chords. It was laid down eons ago (2006) for a comp of Radiohead covers titled Exit Music: Songs with Radio Heads. IMO, Ronson’s reworking of “Just” stands out as the single best track on it.

Tossed in for good measure is my favorite cover of a Yorke original, jazz pianist Brad Mehldau’s cover of the Ok Computer fire starter “Paranoid Android.” Unexpected, experimental and incredibly cohesive, Mehldau tears the electric ferocity out of the original and adds a touch of eerie fragility. It’s 9 minutes of pure  joy that is apparently followed by Brand Nubian’s hate filled “Pass the Gat” in my iTunes library. Set it off tuesdaY!
