mp3 : Turbo Fruits – Keepin’ On/Where the Stars Don’t Shine
Sometime during the summer I was standing outside of a house show chatting with a good friend of mine and Jonas Stein from Turbo Fruits. We were talking about his upcoming Bruise Cruise when a 13-year-old boy [with a voice so high-pitched, you would think it was me on Christmas morning (circa 1993)] comes up and taps him on the shoulder. The conversation went a bit like this:
- – -
“H-H-Hey man. Are you, um… are you the, uh, the lead singer of the…um…the Turbo Fruits?”
“Yeah, dude, I am!”
“Whoa. That’s, like, that’s so cool. I’m in a, uh, a thing… I mean, a band, with some of my friends. We cover one of your songs. It’s definitely not as good as you guys though, haha, um, yeah. you’re cool”
“Thanks dude. At least someone’s playing that song. We haven’t touched it in years”
“(Awkward laughing for a little bit longer than socially acceptable) heh, yeah. cool. awesome. i,uh, i’m going to go. can i shake your hand? you’re awesome. i’ve seen you like five times. four? five. definitely five. see you around? haha, yeah. rad. sweet.”

It was perfect. It was so cool to see that kind of raw, untouched passion, and pure appreciation, for music, which is exactly what the band does best; raw, un-messed with music that will have you thirsting for more. And although that anecdote was long, ridiculous, and almost as unnecessary as the state of Ohio, it brings me to one of my favorite bands since I saw them play with Heavy Cream and Awesome Color two summers ago.
Take one part Southern, whiskey-bred Nashville-ians, another part sound-quality-from-a-basement, influences from The Stooges, The Damned, and The Sonics, one smokin’ lead with Bob Dylan hair who only wears cut off t-shirts, tons of weed, tons of songs about not having enough weed, a diet consisting solely of pop tarts, and mix it all together into a clever and spunky group who’s life goals consist of riding motorcycles, getting laid, and losing as many brain cells as possible.
Songs like “Volcano”, “Colt 45”, “Trouble” and “Naked With You” have gotten major play on my record player in the past, and the latest two singles “Keepin’ On” and “Where the Stars Don’t Shine” have kept up the fuzzed-out style I have come to love. Check out the new singles on Turbo Time Records.
