mp3 : Sic Alps – Cement Surfboard
Sic Alps. Difficult to describe, but oh so enthralling. These noise rockers are native to San Francisco, putting them in the same zip code as Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall, reaffirming the fact that if it didn’t cost $1700 in rent to stay in someone’s closet, I’d live there in a heartbeat. Their sound comes off as natural, never rushed or over-polished, nervous, simple, garage rock that is both convincing and perfectly awkward. The notes never seem right, the hooks are short and sweet, and sometimes the most enticing part of a song is the negative space. If Shaggy from the Scooby Doo gang drove his Mystery Mobile around solving mysteries in order to support his nighttime gig playing bass in a band, it would definitely be this one. Napa Asylum was released by Drag City last month and I can’t seem to get enough of the 22-track album. (If you are anywhere near Austin next week, check them out live at Emo’s with me). Be there or be square. Or be there AND be square. Whatever.
