Damien Jurado vs. Strand of Oaks | “OHIO”

This is pretty awesome.

Oddly enough, the first time I heard Damien Jurado’s “Ohio,” it was performed at a friend’s house by Timothy Showalter, aka Strand of Oaks. It sounded amazing that night (much like any cover he lends his voice to) and if he hadn’t introduced the song as belonging to Jurado, I would’ve thought it was his own. Upon leaving the show that evening I remember wishing that someone had recored the set and better yet, that I was sober enough to remember what the cover I had drooled over was called. Somehow, I managed to figure it out and since that night I’ve grown to love and lean on the original version of this song for its sound and great story. Honestly, it is probably the single song that I listened to the most last year.

Well, just last week, Tim recorded a hear ya live session in Chicago and he played  a great set of newer tunes from his second album, Pope Killdragon. And he played “Ohio.” Shit, it’s good. He took and simple and heart tugging song, broke it into tiny pieces and made Jurado’s words tug a little harder.

While the two artists may disagree on which version is better, it’s a total toss up for me. I think they’re both great.
