Does My Morning Jacket Love Classic Thai Pop??

So… yesterday we posted the new MMJ song.. and some old school Thai pop afficienado brought this.. very interesting and VERY similar song to our attention.  Judge for yourself!

EDIT: We are aware Mr James referenced thai soul pop as an influence. The specific song he referenced is not this song(read/listen here), but is on the same thai pop compilation as the song that sounds eerily similar to his new release. This makes this even more “odd” haha

My Morning Jacket – Holdin On to Black Metal

  1. It sounds very similar because MMJ actually took that riff and built on that, they have said so themselves.

I had heard that earlier today.. before I posted this(we do the best research we can).. but then I saw he mentioned Ubon Pattana‘s “Lam Sarawan” via the Spin article. You can check/listen here

this is not that. It is on the same compilation album I gather, but not the same song. Perhaps you have different info?

I would be interested to know what(substantial) was added. To a non musician ( me ) it seems the same as if I took the music to say.. The Troggs Wild Thing and put Italian lyrics about the death of my wife and added a synth.

As long as they acknowledge it musically not really their own song. no harm no foul…this is more of an homage/cover Again I like MMJ, I just think this is a hilarious happening. Blatantly Ballsy. MMJ superfans won’t care and MMJ haters will still hate…but this is not really their own song in the pure sense IMO

you should call yourself the “jizzard” you jerk-off.
way to make something outta nothing!
you should apply for work at fox news with that kind of blatant ignorance and affinity for misinformation.
