Immortal Monday | The Rentals- Return of the Rentals

Before everybody got a music blog, the best place to get free advice and free samples of what you should be loading into your DiscMan was e-commerce sites.  There is no way that I could ever recall how many great gems found my headphones thanks to 30 second samples and Amazon recommends. And there were also thoughtful album reviews attached. Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of times where I was lead astray but I think I ended up with winners far more than the few times I “add to cart”ed Limp Bizkit understudies.

While there are still bands I found there in heavy rotation, no single record gets more play than the 1995 release, Return of the Rentals by The Rentals. If you’re not familiar, originally formed by Weezer bassist Matt Sharp, The Rentals emerged in between the success of The Blue Album and the recording of Pinkerton. Also in the band were Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson  and everybody’s favorite indie violinist, Petra Hayden.

The music didn’t sound exactly like their other band’s, but it had the same fun feel to it. The Rentals, much like early Weezer, made power pop to sway your head to and blow your speakers up. They utilized simple themes of love and disillusion with power chords and great harmonies. Return of the Rentals is an album that only seems to get better with age and one that definitely deserves to be considered immortal.

Happy Monday!!
