Original Recipe – Daniel Johnston
It still boggles my mind that everyone who digs music doesn’t love Daniel Johnston. What is stranger to me, is that a fair amount of people haven’t really heard much of him past the “hits”… if that. Admittedly, the recording quality of a bulk of his music is sub sub par, but if you can look past that(I mean seriously big whoop) you find one of the most amazing and influential american musicians ever.
You would be hard pressed to find modern musicians you love that haven’t been in some way influenced/fallen in love.. by/with the songs of Daniel Johnston. .. Radiohead, Nirvana, Beck , Wilco, Pixies, My Morning Jacket, MGMT, Bright Eyes, TV on The Radio, The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo. ..this list goes on like this almost forever. Obviously, He has influenced some more then others. Those artists have in turn influenced other artists and so it goes.
Despite coping with a Bipolar disorder throughout his career to mixed results and sadly/gladly never really achieving commercial success, Daniel’s music will be forever be a gem. If you haven’t really listened to him before(What?!?!).. these tracks will still be familiar as you will hear the music of others he touched. If you are already a fan… no doubt I missed some of your favourites, but a good reason to pull out your collection and go through it again.
