Hand Me Down Tuesday: Strand of Oaks Covers Beck’s “The Golden Age”

I’m pretty sure that everyone that likes music-as much as we do-has certain records that stand in for years of their lives. They’re the albums that bring up the smell of the coffee shop you used to hang at in college, the ones that remind you of stretches of ground that you used to tread upon daily,  or unforgettable tracklists that call upon memories of people that have come and gone but still hold crazy presence in the folds of your mind. These are the albums that make you smile and simultaneously pull out your phone to text a friend to say “Hey, blame this interruptive vibration on the fact that I am currently listening to _________ .”

Beck’s Sea Change does that for me. Without going into details, it’s a brilliant and picture perfect snapshot of what my 2002 looked like. Not because anything in my life paralleled the themes of the record, it was simply the album that walked me to and from class everyday. It popped up in cars, bars, and conversations with some of my (to this day) favorite people. It’s perfect.

I’m obviously not the only person that has a connection to the songs that are easily Beck’s most honest and subdued. It was one of our  first Immortal Mondays, the Wizard and I have rapped over candy apples and ginger ale about its delicate brilliance like fanboy freaks, and my boy Tim Showalter (Strand of Oaks) told a small basement full of friends a touching story about  getting his  copy of Sea Change from his dad who had heard a song from it and thought he would like it. It’s pretty unbelievable and deserves to be in everyone’s collection.

That night. In that small basement. In that college town that Sea Change brings back to life. Tim’s story lead into a fantastic cover (honestly, anything he covers is incredible) of the first track off of Sea Change. And the best part about that night and Tim playing that song is that more memories were created. Here’s “The Golden Age.” Cheers.

  1. You hit it on the head again with this one.  Great cover of a great song from a wonderful album.  I also have very specific memories related to this album.  Certain smells of my job at the time, people I discussed he album with…everything.
